Meet our experts
Captain David Conway, MNI, Master Mariner
David has spent 44 years at sea with one oil major, then latterly 16 years in command of tankers and bulk carriers, ranging from Product Carriers and Bulk Carriers to ULCCs.
Admiralty managed to tempt David into a desk job and he worked as an Editor of Sailing Directions and now provides expertise as a Marine Advisor to the UKHO Products and Services team.

Sue Harland, Sailing Directions Editor
Sue Harland spent 15 years working as a deck officer in the Merchant Navy. She achieved the rank of Chief Officer and has served on general cargo vessels, product tankers, gas tankers, dredgers, fast craft and conventional ropax ferries.
To the benefit of Admiralty, Sue has had a slight change of career and has taken an office job ashore and works as an Admiralty Editor of Sailing Directions.

Captain Chris Berkley, MNI, Master Mariner
Chris Berkley's early career saw him progress from 3rd Officer to Ship Master in less than a decade. Most of his seagoing career was spent serving in vessels of 20,000 to 110,000 tonnes as well as time spent on board a VLCC.
He joined Admiralty as Editor of Sailing Directions in 2007. UKHO have been able to take advantage of his experience and Chris now acts as Product Specialist on the e-Navigator team.

Hugh Phillips, Head of Products
Hugh is responsible for the development and management of Admiralty Products and Services. He played a leading role in the development of the Electronic Navigation Chart Standard S57 while he was working as Secretary to the Transfer Standards Working Group with the International Hydrographic Organisation.
A great asset to the marketing team, Hugh holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, is a Master of Science in Remote Sensing and also holds a Masters in Business and a Marketing Diploma.

Christine Trickett, Applications Product Manager
Christine's time and energy is being fully engaged in the development and preparation for market of Admiralty e-Navigator. She is working closely with our suppliers and industry experts - both internally and externally - making sure that this navigation tool of the future is going to meet everyone's needs and demands.
A strong background in IT and application development, Christine also holds a Business IT degree from Kingston University.

Jason Scholey, Electronic Charts Product Manager
Jason looks after the Admiralty portfolio of paper and digital chart services. He was part of the team that worked with the International Hydrographic Organisation to develop the ENC data specification S57 and the ECDIS display symbols S52.
Jason has been one of the main driving forces behind the successful launch of AVCS and continues to develop and improve this popular product - the rollout of China ENCs being his latest achievement. Jason is a Cambridge graduate with a BA in Mathematics.

Pete Hatton, Nautical Publications Product Manager
Pete manages Admiralty's portfolio of nautical publications, including Admiralty Digital Publications. Pete is leading the work to make all of our nautical publications data available in digital formats, and he is working closely with customers and navigation experts to ensure that our digital publications portfolio meets the industry's current and future requirements.
Pete is a graduate of the University of Leeds, with a BA in History, and also holds diplomas in Management and Marketing. He has a background in general management and product management, acquired across a variety of industries.

Simon Hampshire, Data Service Manager
Initially employed as a Mapping and Charting officer, including charting the western pacific nations, Simon is now responsible for the delivery assurance of Admiralty Digital Services. After undergoing extensive training as an ENC Mapping and Charting Officer, he worked for the International Centre for ENCs.
His work today sees him in daily contact with our worldwide complement of VARs and Distributors, working to further improve Admiralty's services.

Richard Coombes, OEM Technical Support Manager
Richard joined Admiralty in 1974 as a Cartographic Draughtsman, he has spent considerable time in the Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Section. During this period he attended the School of Military Survey where he obtained professional qualifications in this science.
In 2001 he entered his current post as OEM Technical Support Manager, working closely with the OEMs over technical matters relating to Admiralty Digital Products. Richard has acquired a vast amount of knowledge and understanding of ECDIS/ECS equipment. His technical expertise in this field is utilised widely by Admiralty and by external organisations - Richard acts as secretary to IHO Working Groups, the S-63 Data Protection Scheme and the S-52 Digital Information Portrayal, he is also vice chairman of the ENC Updating WG.

Chris Smith, Technical and Regulatory Advisor
Chris joined Admiralty in the mid 1970s when some nautical chart printing bases were still being engraved on copper plates. For the last 16 years he has been closely involved in the development of digital chart services at Admiralty starting with the Admiralty Raster Chart Service (ARCS) and progressing on to the ENC and digital nautical publication services that we see today.
Chris is currently acting in an advisor role with a special remit to consider and assist in making the transition from paper to electronic navigation as smooth as possible.
