Ian Moncrieff CBE, Chief Executive

Ian Moncrieff was born in Lancashire and graduated in Geography and Geology at Keele University in 1977 on a RN university cadetship. He subsequently enjoyed a varied and always stimulating 34 year career in the Royal Navy.

Qualified as a Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) originally specialising in Communications, he has 20 years operational seagoing experience in 11 warships and embracing 4 Command appointments.

He commanded the destroyer HMS NOTTINGHAM and Antarctic patrol ship HMS ENDURANCE and was the Executive Officer of the aircraft carrier HMS INVINCIBLE. His active service includes OPERATION SHARP GUARD (Former Republic of Yugoslavia) and OPERATION BOLTON (Iraq). He has also held Joint Operational Command as Commander British Forces South Atlantic based in the Falklands.

Ashore, his staff experience includes a strong pedigree of senior appointments in Policy, Plans and Programmes in MOD Centre, as well as Fleet and Royal Marines HQs. He is a graduate of the Higher Command and Staff Course and Defence Strategic Leadership Course. He holds the IoD certificate in Company Direction.

He became the UK National Hydrographer and Deputy Chief Executive on the UKHO Board in the rank of Rear Admiral in Dec 06. His portfolio included responsibility for all UK Defence related matters. He was appointed CBE in HM The Queen's Birthday Honours List 2010. He retired from the Navy in Nov 2010 and became the Chief Operating Officer at the UKHO in December. This was another UKHO Board role with executive responsibility for Operations Production and Supply, Procurement and Intellectual Property, the Programme Support Office, Legal, and significantly, the Transformation Programme. He took over as Chief Executive on 17 Oct 2011.

He and his wife Marion live in the Exmoor National Park and have two sons, Andrew (born 1987), a graduate in Politics who is a 2Lt in The Royal Dragoon Guards and James (born 1990) studying Politics at the University of Newcastle and an Army Officer candidate on a bursary. He is a Younger Brother of Trinity House, a Freeman of the City of London and Member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, the Institute of Directors, the Royal Institute of Navigation and the RNLI Council and Trustee of Falklands Conservation. Pastimes include dinghy sailing and golf and he has had work published as an amateur wildlife photographer.



Rear Admiral Nick Lambert, National Hydrographer

Nick Lambert joined the Royal Navy as a Seaman in March 1977. He served as a Radar Operator in HM Ships DIOMEDE and ACHILLES until entering BRNC DARTMOUTH and commissioning as a Seaman Officer in January 1979. After training at the College and sea he graduated with an Honours Degree in Geography at the University of Durham in 1983.

The next ten years were at sea as a Warfare Officer in HM Ships BIRMINGHAM, ARK ROYAL, ACHILLES and CARDIFF.

He served in the South Atlantic, Persian Gulf and Adriatic; notably in HMS CARDIFF during Operations DESERT SHIELD and STORM following the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Thereafter he returned to HMS ARK ROYAL as Senior Warfare Officer when she was the first aircraft carrier deployed to the Adriatic in response to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.

In 1993, Rear Admiral Lambert was appointed Flag Lieutenant to the Commander-in-Chief Fleet, Admiral Sir Hugo White, GCB, CBE and, subsequently, as Naval Assistant to Admiral Sir Peter Abbott, KCB. In May 1996 he took command of HMS BRAZEN, supervising her sale to Brazil before commanding HMS NEWCASTLE until 1998. Appointed to the Directorate of Operational Requirements (Sea) in the Ministry of Defence in June 1998, he sponsored the business case for the Future Surface Combatant, a replacement frigate programme. Promoted Captain in October 1999, he was the Chief of Maritime and Amphibious Operations to the Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces North Europe in the Netherlands.

As Chief of Staff to the Commander UK Maritime Force (the Navy's Maritime Battle Staff) from 2002-2004, he was awarded the Legion of Merit (Degree of Legionnaire) by the US Congress for services to Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. He commanded the ice patrol ship HMS ENDURANCE from 2005-2007, deploying for two fascinating and deeply rewarding seasons in Antarctica. Promoted in February 2007, he commanded Task Force 158 in the North Arabian Gulf, tasked with the protection of Iraq's economically vital offshore oil infrastructure. Thereafter he was Deputy Flag Officer Sea Training from January 2008 to November 2009 before assuming the role of Assistant Chief of Staff Operations and Capability Integration on 9 November 2009 in the Navy Command Headquarters.

Nick Lambert married Beverly in 1989; they have two children and have moved to Somerset. Apart from family and an as yet unfulfilled ambition to manage the construction of his own house, his interests include gliding, cookery, gardening and sailing.
