A unique business conference

We find ourselves in interesting times, facing the challenges of a changing economy, manpower, training, compliance and safety, while the introduction of mandatory ECDIS carriage from 2012 is rapidly approaching.

The conference offered real solutions to the challenges you face on a daily basis. Run in partnership between Admiralty and HanseNautic, the day was chaired by Tom Leander, Editor of Lloyd's List. The speakers introduced a wide range of practical subjects and gave the opportunity for attendies to ask questions and provide feedback.

The Future of Navigation was held at the International Maritime Museum, Hamburg on 20 May 2010.

Presenter biographies

Bjorn Woge — Managing Director, HanseNautic
Bjorn Woge Bjorn Woge is Managing Director and a Partner of HanseNautic GmBH (formerly Bade & Hornig). He started his career in 1988 in banking and holds a Diploma in Economics.

He spent four years as an assistant stockbroker at the Hamburg stock exchange before moving on to become a stock broker in German Equities for a private Bank and then a private organisation.

He took over at HanseNautic in 2000 and has been involved in ocean sailing for over 25 years. He is also qualified to skipper non-commercial vessels and has completed three trans-Atlantic races.

Tom Leander — Editor, Lloyd's List
Tom Leander - Editor, Lloyd's ListTom Leander has been the editor of Lloyd's List since May 2009. Prior to this, he worked for the Economist Group for ten years, including a nine-year stint as editor-in-chief of CFO Asia and CFO China magazines, both published out of Hong Kong. These monthly publications covered rising Asian business and finance. CFO Asia's coverage spanned Japan to India. CFO China, published in Mandarin, covered the changing financial scene in mainland China.

Leander also served as editorial director of EuroFinance, an Economist-owned London-based conference and research organisation devoted to corporate treasury and treasury banking.

Leander's previous roles included managing editor of Global Finance magazine, based in New York; reporter, northeast bureau, for American Banker, New York; and head of the EVA Institute at Stern Stewart and Co., a New York management consulting firm.

Professor Rudolf Kreutzer
Professor Rudolf Kreutzer Professor Rudolf Kreutzer is a Master Mariner and marine engineer who now lectures at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. There his key subjects include navigation, safety, ISM and resource management. He is also a senior instructor and course developer for the two full mission simulators at the University.

Professor Kreutzer started his seagoing career in 1981 with Hamburg Süd and later studied to become a Master Mariner at the University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg. In 1988 he was awarded the Leo-Brandt award from the German Institute of Navigation (DGON) for his thesis dealing with the accuracy of position fixing systems.

For the next ten years he served on a variety of container ships, tankers and multipurpose ships, combining his career with studies at Hamburg University in pedagogics, informatics and maritime economics, acquiring a teaching diploma. In 1998 he began teaching as a Maritime Lecturer in Cuxhaven, then he was appointed Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer.

Don Gregory, Chartered Marine Engineer, MBA
Don Gregory Don is currently Partner & Managing Director of SMS (Sustainable Maritime Solutions), Director of Azurtane and Director of the EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems) Association. His current focus is on maritime environment compliance management, energy security and maritime levers for climate change reduction.

Prior to joining SMS he was Director for Sustainability and Fuel Technology responsible for BP Group marine energy policy with respect to environment, sustainability and climate change.

Since 2001 he has sought to create a forward vision for the marine energy industry in the area of air quality and has been responsible for the formation of SEAaT (Shipping Emissions Abatement and Trading) and the installation of the first full scale exhaust gas scrubber system. In 2004 he formed Krystallon to commercialize sea water scrubber technology. He was a member of IMO Secretary General's Group of Experts. He convened and chaired the UK Ship Emissions Round Table Advisory Group (SERTAG) developing proposals for regulating CO2 emissions from merchant shipping.

He has directed a number of projects evaluating low emissions and/or renewable marine energy sources including invert emulsion residual fuels and commercial waste to liquid marine fuels. He has piloted the application of advanced cascade laser gas sensing technology for the simplification of managing marine exhaust gas emissions.

Seafarer safety, bunker industry integrity, legal compliance, innovation and transformation are themes which he has lead within IBIA.

Previously he was General Manager for BP Marine (Africa). Earlier in his career he set up Predict Monitoring Services; industrial machinery condition monitoring (ferrography). He has lead technical services and product development within BP Marine fuels and lubricants.

Prior to joining BP Don had 14 years seagoing experience. He served as Chief Engineer with Panocean Anco on their chemical tanker fleet, but he also undertook several secondments on VLCCs, AH&S vessels and cargo ships.

Don is a Past Chairman of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA).

Mads Friis Sørensen — Furuno
Mads Friis Sørensen Mads Friis Sørensen is the Branch Manager at Furuno European Branch Office (FEBO) and has worked for Furuno for 11 years.

His career started with a Degree in Electronic Engineering and he then went on to lecture in engineering at the Copenhagen Technical College. Later he put his practical skills to full use as a Service Engineer at B and K Medical, training service engineers and providing hotline and on-site technical support. Then he moved on to become System Engineers at Thrane and Thrane, managing the shore based satellite communication system projects.

His first role at Furuno was a Project Manager (Intergrated Nanigation Systems) with responsibility for European shipyards and owners, before taking up the position of Branch Manager at FURUNO's European Branch Office.

Ken Helle Jensen — Furuno
Ken Helle Jensen Ken Helle Jensen has worked for Furuno for 6 years and is now Training Manager at the Furuno Integrated Navigation System Training Centre (INSTC) in Copenhagen.

He holds a not competed Mariners licence and is trained as an engineer in signal processing and micro computers before moving on to take up roles as System Engineer at Raytheon Marine Electronics (USA) and then Selesmar Marine Radar (Italy). He later worked as a Project and System Engineer at ASPO Systems OY in Finland (which later became Furuno Finland) where his role incorporated working on the contract for Wallenius Lines and delivering their navigation and training requirements.

His first role at Furuno INSTC was as an Instructor and Course Developer, before taking up the position of Training Manager.

Hugh Phillips — Head of Products, Admiralty
Christine TrickettHugh Phillips is Head of Products at the UKHO, where he is responsible for the development and management of the core Admiralty navigational product portfolio.

He joined the UKHO in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and has also completed a Master of Science in Remote Sensing, a Masters in Business and a Marketing Diploma.

Before taking on his current role, Hugh was involved in a range of functions in the organisation including photogrammetry (the practice of determining the geometric properties of objects from photographic images), IT systems development, production of navigational publications, and marketing and product development.

Hugh also played a leading role in the development of the Electronic Navigation Chart standard S57 while working with the International Hydrographic Organisation as the Secretary to the Transfer Standards Working Group.

Married with three children, in his spare time Hugh enjoys playing hockey and watching and coaching football.

Jason Scholey — Charts Product Manager, Admiralty
Jason ScholeyJason Scholey is Product Manager (Charts) for the UKHO, and looks after the UKHO's portfolio of chart services, both paper and digital, to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of customers. The portfolio currently consists of the paper Admiralty chart series, the Admiralty Raster Chart Services (ARCS), the Admiralty ECDIS Service and the Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS).

Jason joined the UKHO as a management trainee in 1993 after graduating from Cambridge University with a BA in Mathematics. He was part of the team that worked with the International Hydrographic Organisation to develop the ENC data specification (S-57) and the ECDIS display symbols (S-52).

He took responsibility for AVCS in April 2008 after being part of the successful product launch team. Prior to that, Jason was also involved in the UKHO's early ENC production systems and spent a number of years developing opportunities for the wider use of chart and hydrographic information applications such as environmental management and coastal zone mapping.

Living in Exeter with his wife and son, Jason enjoys kayak surfing and whitewater kayaking wherever he can. His biggest expedition has been kayaking the Grand Canyon, when he spent 15 days in the wilderness with not a Blackberry in sight!

Jason also holds a Professional Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
