The future of navigation

The world of marine navigation is changing. The transition from paper charts to digital technology heralds a new era in navigation. It brings new regulation such as the ECDIS Mandate and an increased focus on efficiency which will impact mariners, superintendents and fleet managers alike. Getting from A to B is no longer enough.

From protective to proactive navigation

The UKHO believes that the future of navigation will mean a fundamental shift in focus, from protective to proactive navigation. It will move beyond the basic avoidance of risk to optimising a voyage plan for maximum efficiency based on a range of factors. To achieve this we need to provide not just navigational data, but intelligence about the maritime environment which enables ships to sail both more safely and more efficiently.

A clear vision

The UKHO is dedicated to bringing this vision of e-navigation to life. We're working with partners from across the maritime community and employing all our expertise in delivering quality, reliable and trusted information. As a first step we have already created a portfolio of products that reflect how the world is changing and now released the second step in our plan, Admiralty e-Navigator, which brings together everything you need to manage, plan and execute a voyage safely. The future of navigation starts here.
